So, the upcoming illustration will help you configure Exchange active sync on your Symbian 3 device for Google mail, likewise you can add your corporate mail too.

Wireless input(Not BT) to Symbian devices through USB OTG ftw ?

Just now , after some browsing, came across this video that shows the Nokia E7 connecting to the Arc mouse , by Microsoft through the wireless dongle connected  via Micro USB port(taking advg of the OTG feature). Take a look :

While researching more about Arc mouse i found that it uses the common 2.4 ghz 30 ft wireless technology that was previously used in cordless phone and all current wireless ones except bluetooth keyboards and mouse. So i guess all the wireless keyboards and mice would work with OTG adapter, i don’t have one but i am going to give it a try at my friend’s place and let you know.. what the heck i may even buy one haha 😀

New Symbian UI , how will it look ?

After all the hustle about Nokia Microsoft partnership, it seems our dear Nokia is still committed to bringing updates, including the new UI to the major smartphone platform, Symbian.

We all got a glimpse of it at MWC, it is going to be designed in Qt QML.  While friend, Jay Montano found this photo during some Chinese presentation by Jo Harlow :

new UI

While this almost gives us an idea how it’s going to be, i wanted more and while searching through the interwebz i found this :

Nokia big screen [My Impressions]

Nokia Big screen is a beta app available on Nokia Beta Labs now available for all HDMI out supporting Symbian^3 devices like the Nokia N8 and the yet-to-be-released Nokia E7.

Nokia Big Screen

Before starting to blabber my thoughts, i will answer some FAQs

1. What does it do ?

A: After you install this app, whenever you plug the HDMI adapter to your phone, the app automatically starts. There are two faces for this app, one is on the HDTV and other is on the touch screen. The HDTV displays the media centre app in 720p while the touch screen turns into a directional remote. If you are not getting what i say, there is a clear video after the break to explain that.

2. Where can i get this app ?

A: You can get the app here and don’t forget, you should have a Nokia account to download this app.

3. What are the advantages ?

A: Your Symbian^3 device turns into a media centre, plays movies, music, slideshows in a fancy way. Movies display subtitles, Music shows lyrics if available, and of course the photo library can do a nice slideshow. And you can control everything wirelessly if you have a Wii controller or any other Bluetooth device that supports HID.So, the advantage you get is showing off your media to an audience while relaxing in your couch.

If you have any more questions don’t be shy to shoot it at me in the comments section 🙂

Head on after the break for my impressions and a video preview.

How to change font in any Symbian^3 device [Updated with Qt 4.7.2 and Nokia Pure]

Update : Qt 4.7.2 has solved the font break in Qt apps. Now you can use whatever font you want . Get Qt 4.7.2 here : Qt 4.7.2 , Qt webkit , Qt mobility 1.1

Install all the three Qt binaries and you are all set to change fonts.

Proof that Qt apps dont break :

Lets get on with the tutorial then :

Here’s what you should do :

1. Make sure you have a memory card in your Symbian^3 device , you cannot change fonts using the Mass memory. ( Update : Mass memory works too ! )

2. Then get any True type font with .ttf as extension (if you want Nokia Pure, click here  <— This file contains all the renamed fonts like the ones given below) .

3. Now navigate to the Resource folder in memory card’s Root ( for example if M: is memory card , navigate to M:/Resource , if its not there, create one)

4.Now create a Folder called Fonts in M:/Resource ( So the folder path should be M:/Resource/Fonts )

5.Now this is the most important step :

Make four copies of the font you have and rename the same font to the corresponding filenames. ( for example: if you have helvetica(01).ttf rename it to nosnr60.ttf , like wise rename others to respective filenames given below )

nosnr60.ttf

nssb60.ttf

nstsb60.ttf

S60ZDIGI.ttf

6. After you have renamed to the above filenames, Copy them to the Fonts folder In M:/Resource/Fonts.

Now reboot the phone and enjoy your new fonts 🙂

I have used the Helvetica Neue font and it looks like this :

Helvetica Neue Font

Hint : If you want the original fonts back, just erase the Fonts folder and reboot the phone.

Please share this if you like it .
