Hey @Nokia, there’s a new kid on the block

You might have already known this by now if you had been following me on twitter ( @bharadc23 ), but there is a purpose in posting it here and now. Sole purpose is to provide clarity on my priorities and this blog’s future.

14th of October 2010 was the day this site became known in the Nokia community, thanks to this special unboxing video i made for my now year old blue N8 –

This site was started as a hobby to just share whatever news i found interesting, and obviously, Nokia news was very interesting to me, so i started sharing a lot of it here, interspersed with news from other companies as well. So, after some time, i felt i needed to concentrate on Nokia news elsewhere, hence i wrote for Jay Montano’s MyNokiaBlog starting January 2011. It went really well and i personally thank Jay for letting me write in one of the most influential Nokia blogs ever. I enjoyed getting noticed by a larger audience. Meanwhile, i was getting some review devices from Nokia and i was reviewing them here, along with the other company quintessential news features and opinions.

After some months of this routine, i had problems in getting myself back into writing mode, it was very hard, you might see the number posts in the recent months was nothing compared to my earlier starting months. I wanted to start afresh again, but it was really really hard writing every bit of tech news with work getting higher priority, so i was hard at thinking what to do, then this happened – Some thing spurred me to write a post about how i started writing about Nokia, and them everything dawned. I am absolutely a hard core Nokia fan because i have used Nokia phones and lived with them all my life. Hence –

I decided to start my own Nokia site, presenting to you — NokiaBuff.com ( Follow on facebook / twitter )

It will be all about Nokia and it’s ecosystems. I will provide you up to date Nokia news and reviews there.

What will happen to thegadgetbuff then ? It stays ! The Gadgetbuff will be outlet for opinions and reviews on other platforms. It is not possible for a single person to bring you up to date news on every platform, so i will be reporting on really huge game changing news, delivering my opinions from time to time on whichever i find debatable and interesting.

So, that’s it. I am proud to join the Nokia community as a real Nokia blogger now. Wish me luck ! Please do visit the site if you are a real Nokia Buff ! See you on the other side.

Don’t forget thegadgetbuff too, classy opinions coming when big stuff like ICS and other iNews happens ! ūüėČ

HTC launches EVO 3D in India | priced at Rs.34,990/-

Slightly lesser than the LG optimus 3D that launched a while ago for Rs.37,000/- , the HTC Evo 3D is a product created for a niche segment, the segment which is in awe of 3D as the future of technology. While i am not debating the 3D as the technology standard of the future, but as of now, the present, it is not yet mature for creation or consumption. Anyhow, the HTC Evo is still an impressive device in terms of raw specifications, the usability is a personal opinion though.

The device has a glass free 3D 4.3 inch display with a qHD resolution, it can toggle between 2D or 3D mode in the camera using a hardware switch. Other specifications include :

  • Dual 5 Megapixel cameras
  • 1.2 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • Runs Android Gingerbread
  • Battery capacity is 1730 mAh

Looking forward to buying this phone ? You better read some reviews first –

Myriam Joire from Engadget

Ultimately, we’ve come to think of the EVO 3D as a Sensation with a lesser camera, cheaper materials, worse battery life, and without the ability to roam worldwide. But hey, it’s got 3D and the best dedicated two-stage camera button that’s ever graced a phone. That’s gotta be worth something, right?

GSMArena team –

The HTC EVO 3D is a device that strives to do it all and we are pleased to report that for the most part it delivers. However, competition is so intense today that it would be impossible to beat everyone at every level. The EVO 3D gets points for trying. Winners don’t pick their battles, you’d just be wise to pick your priorities.

Ross miller from thisismynext lists out the Pros and cons

Pros

Sturdy design
Fast hardware
3D optional (but does work!)

Cons

Small viewing angles for 3D
Some nasty software glitches
Symptoms of 3D can include dizziness, eye strain, nausea…

Decide for yourself ūüôā Let me know in the comments if you actually bought one of these

HTC Omega/Radar [WP7 Mango] breaks cover, looks like a small Flyer

The first impressions after looking at this below leaked photo from Pocketnow (the leakmeisters), i was reminded of the flyer design and hey Windows Phone Mango !?

Made in a gorgeous silver-white body, this HTC phone had already done it’s rumor rounds when they announced the September 1 event.

The rumored specs are : 3.8 inch Display, a 8 megapixel camera, 1.5 GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon with 512 MB RAM. Is that a Front Facing Cam in that picture ?

The 1.5 GHz bit is to be taken with a pinch of salt, otherwise the specs look ok. Another higher end HTC WPMango in the name of Eternity is set to launch along with Omega at the September 1 event. Ok, Pocketnow where is the Eternity , out with it already ! Jokes aside, we dont have to wait too long as the event is not so far away.

HTC to introduce new Mango Windows Phones at September 1 event

Partnership still intact eh ?

HTC, the rapidly upcoming smartphone superpower is supposedly going to unveil new Mango based Windows Phone devices at an event taking place on September 1st, reports BGR.

According to BGR’s well placed sources, two new devices, namely HTC omega and HTC eternity are going to be introduced , and catch is, it’s a Windows Phone only event ! HTC is a big proponent of the Android ecosystem and it has recently confirmed that Android is it’s main platform. Isn’t it surprising that they are holding a Windows phone- only event ?

Also, according to BGR, the Eternity is a mango phone with a 3.7 inch display headed to AT&T, and Omega is a 4.5¬† inch mammoth headed to T-Mobile. Both same carriers if the merger goes through. So, i guess no love for CDMA, on the brighter side, the GSM devices would be globally available and soon it may launch in India too. If HTC markets them well enough, it should succeed here. Let’s see how the hardware specs hold against the slew of dual-core Android devices.

Sony’s prospective tablet future starts with iconic S1 and dual screen S2

Still a concept ?

Sony, known to make the most glamorous notebooks , is now in the tablet game with the launch of two tablets namely S1 and S2 . Like Asus and Dell , Sony is jumping head-first into the second most competitive “tablet segment” and they have chosen to side with evil, errrr… i mean Google. Yes , they are using Honeycomb as their ecosystem catalyst , modifying it looks-wise and are supplying their own specialized apps like for ex : Qriocity for music streaming et al.

It is very interesting to note that Sony, not Sony Ericcsson, is bringing the stuff to the table.¬† Note that all legacy PC manufacturers, like HP,Dell and ASUS wanted a slice of the smartphone segment and they all did it, except Sony, because they already had Sony Ericsson to churn out a significant amount of smartphones, but looking at the tablet segment, Sony seems to have taken quite a liking . By all means, SE has better workforce in terms of skill based on ARM devices. If they had wanted , they could have slapped a Qualcomm chipset onto a bigger slab and called it a tablet, like what HTC did with Flyer. But no, Sony had seen something so lucrative in the tablet market that they ditched SE and took full control. So, virtually every big shard PC manufacturer is directly involved in the tablet arena created by erstwhile PC manufacturer Apple ( Mac is a personal computer !). And every other manufacturer than Apple or HP is using the latest version of Google’s Android Honeycomb, which is yet to take off well, in terms of native apps. While the addition of Sony brings class and innovation , we should also note that it’s also bringing huge competition to it’s own ecosystem. Now, all that info aside, let’s concentrate on the new tablets for the time being.

Some details from Sony’s press notes :

S1 has a 9.4-inch display for enjoying the web and rich content on a large screen. Its off-center of gravity design realizes stability and ease of grip as well as a sense of stability and lightness, offering comfortable use for hours.

S2 has two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded for easy portability. In contrast to existing tablets, its unprecedented dual screen presentation and usability allows its displays to be combined and used as a large screen or for different functions such as playing video on one screen while showing control buttons on the other.

The S1 is designed like a magazine book, when folded . Has a much traditional form factor otherwise. 9.4 inch touchscreen and a bezel on the front, and other Honeycomb standards like Tegra 2 processor, front and rear facing cameras.. etc. The S2 has two 1024×480 displays with a lot of bezel. Both S1 and S2 have a lot in common, that is , hardware innards, both are PlayStation certified, they are capable of acting as remote control for all Sony bravia AV devices, also DLNA support, while sporting a new tile based Honeycomb UI.

Hit the break for the press release.

Nokia India’s D.Shivakumar launches E7 with SRK,elaborates on #NokMsft [Video]

SRK and the E7 launch

Nokia India has launched the Nokia E7 in a grand fashion with bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan at the capital yesterday. The E7 is priced at Rs.29,999/- .Expect a review from me,soon.

Also,i think this is the first time the head honcho of Nokia India has given a press briefing after the #NokMsft partnership. He has spoken to the press regarding the Nokia-Microsoft partnership for the first time in India.

He gives us thoughts on Nokia’s future dictated by his worldwide boss Stephen Elop, but seems to¬†have declined to comment on job cuts here in India, according to CNBC TV18. What he says is plainly what Elop said, but in a more practical way.

Key takeaways :

  • Complete transition to Windows Phone will start by 2013 ( practical since migration atleast to India will take long )
  • key strategies include maintaining current customer base, Internet for the next billion and of course spearheading the partnership with Microsoft
  • Nokia India will take some hard measures , meaning there WILL be job cuts, mostly the Symbian engineering teams in Bangalore will face the axe.
