HP likely to cancel PC spin off now that Apotheker has been ousted

I am here to stay ?

Hp, recently ousted Leo Apotheker, the embattled CEO who led the company for the past year. He has been replaced with Meg Whitman, the new CEO. She had issued a statement that she will not cancel Leo’s future plans for the company.

While Meg thinks so, Digitimes, the retail channel paparazzi has heard some interesting chit chat. According to the sources, HP wants to back off from their decision to spin off their PC unit and bring back the sales. This is due to increased channel pressure. Channel partners were scared after HP’s decision to look at spinning off their PSG unit, so they looked for other PC mftrs. like Acer, who seems to be the most profitable of this change of mind. Hp is expected to ship 37-38 million notebooks in 2011, but i don’t think that will happen unless channel operators have their confidence back. Hence the rumors. So will Hp back track it’s decision ?

Meg Whitman is the only person who can answer.

CyanogenMod has done it again : Android on TouchPad [Video]

Recently, we came across a weird story that Android ran on some person’s touchpad out of the box. The person even put it on eBay for sale.

Well, forget that, no need to buy a droidPad now that CyanogenMod has really got Android working on a touchpad already.

This all started with the HP TouchPad firesale that happened the last before weekend. More than 60% of the people who bought it wanted Android running on their TouchPad.

If you are not aware, the CyanogenMod team is responsible for making the most stable Android aftermarket firmwares like the CM7, currently the most popular too. They are the persons responsible for making Android, i mean CyanogenMod 7 ( Based on Gingerbread ) running on the HP touchpad. The OS is in the alpha stage right now.

Major kudos to the team. Apparently they dont want that bounty of 2000$ thats going the rounds. They say ” We are motivated to do it right, not do it fast “. Aren’t they so cool ?

Anyhow, here’s the video of the alpha Android that is a few weeks old, seems they already have a much better version running now. Take a look :

They say they’ll provide a final solution that allows to multi boot our choice of the OS. Sounds great for all you TouchPad power users who would want some of the Green Robot’s vast catalog of apps.

Samsung to acquire WebOS business instead of PC biz ?? | Hires HP exec

Well well well, would you look at that ? First, there were rumors of Sammy buying HP’s PC biz, they vehemently denied it afterwards. But suddenly they have scooped up an exec from HP to manage their own PC biz. That HP exec is Raymond Wah, a VP of the PSG ( Personal systems group ) unit of HP which includes WebOS.

Digitimes reports that Samsung is also considering buying the WebOS biz. for competing with Google and Apple. wait.. what ?

So, they have considered their long time partner, a competitor now ? Way to go Google, you and Moto are screwing up the relationships. More questions arise if this rumor is true. What will happen to Bada ? Doesn’t it sell a lot more than what these WebOS devices sold in their total lifetime ? Will they abandon Android and Windows Phone to completely adopt WebOS as their only strategy ?

WebOS plus Samsung hardware sounds fun but as of now WebOS works only on Qualcomm chipsets much like Windows Phone. Samsung is an end to end sourcing company which does not want to rely on other manufacturers. How will it play out if the rumor is true ?

We just have to wait. To add more fuel to the rumors, HP and Samsung have declined to comment. Let’s see where this goes.

HP Touchpad running Android Froyo appears in the wild [Videos]

The Firesale of the HP touchpad was so crazy, right ? Well, things just got crazier, apparently one guy who bought the fiercely sold from an online retailer, says he got the TouchPad running Froyo(yeah, Android) out-of-the-box. Say what ?!

Here’s the proof :

This guy, wants to sell his DroidPad ( i call dibs on this ! 😛 ) on eBay for 499$ . May be you  can get it from him and claim that bounty for running Android on the touchpad. Oh, and another person got hold of a similar DroidPad and has dumped the rom on Rootzwiki.

There are no theories on how this build on Android has landed on the TouchPad, this is no hack or mod. Engadget thinks it may be an internal dev device in Qualcomm. But how the heck did it go on retail ? Apparently it’s the Fire Sale to blame.

Read on to see lots of videos of Android running on Touchpad [Video]

Samsung to acquire HP’s PC business ? [Rumors]

Recently HP announced a massive change in it’s business strategy by cancelling its webOS hardware business and announced it’s intention to spin off it’s PC business, much like what IBM did 5 years earlier. In view of HP spinning off the PC business, lots of rumors are coming from the supply chain now, that Samsung is a prospective buyer of HP’s PC business.

DigiTimes, the supply chain tabloid, reports that Samsung is preparing to outsource a part of its notebook production to Taiwan OEM manufacturers like Compal,Quanta and Pegatron. They say this is an intended move to increase capacity so that there is enough bandwidth to acquire the huge PC business from HP.

This is what the Digitimes folks have to say about this :

The sources pointed that the Taiwan’s notebook OEM industry’s production efficiency and cost control is currently unmatched worldwide; therefore, if Samsung takes over HP’s PC department, HP’s over 40 million PC shipment volume will still need to depend on Taiwan OEMs. However, related suppliers of components such as panel, memory and battery may be affected as Samsung has a rather strong vertical integration supply chain.

Within HP’s 40 million units of PC orders in 2011, Quanta will ship 20 million units with Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) to ship eight million units, Inventec, seven million units, Wistron, 3-4 million units and Compal, two million units.

The sources pointed out that if HP’s PC business is sold to other brand players, makers such as Quanta, Foxconn and Inventec are expected to see the most impact as they have higher order proportions with HP, while Wistron and Compal are expected to benefit.

Commenting on the event, Quanta pointed out that since the information is still limited, the company can only monitor the outcome carefully; however, since the new PC orders from HP for 2012 are all already set, it is unlikely to have significant changes. However, if Samsung takes down HP’s 40 million units of PC shipments and with Samsung’s own 10 million units, the company will need to ship 50-60 million units totally in one year and will definitely need to find OEM partners as Samsung itself may have difficulty to make all these orders, Quanta noted.

However, Quanta will continue to work on cloud computing and the related products in the future to increase its non-notebook business’ contribution.

Meanwhile, Inventec pointed out that HP’s announcement seems like is for testing the market’s reaction and believes that whether HP will sell the business will still depend on the market’s feedbacks. In addition, since HP is given up its PC business because of the weak profitability of consumer notebooks, Inventec, which is manufacturing mainly HP’s enterprise notebooks, expects to only see a limited impact from the event.

Overall looks good for Samsung which is poised to become the top PC manufacturer if it acquires HP’s PC business.
