Nokia announces “Anna” along with the E6 and the X7 as it’s representatives : a big roundup

Yes, the much leaked and pre-announced X7 , and the most detailed leak ever, the E6 have been formally announced today. The X7 is a 4″ slate with specs almost similar to the C7, and the E6 is of the hybrid touch n type form factor that comes with a Qwerty keyboard.

Let’s get to know these devices through the data sheets below :

First , the X7 :

The main differentiation factors for X7 from current Symbian devices are :

  • 4 inch AMOLED screen
  • Housed in a svelte and a slim design with a curved stainless steel back and distinct styling ( Thickness 11.9 mm )
  • Supposedly good Neodymium stereo speakers for best music playback output
  • $548 before taxes and subsidies, Shipping Q2,2011

E6 spec  roundup :

E6’s differentiation factors :

  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • High pixel density VGA screen ( 326 PPI – matching Retina display’s PPI )
  • Astoundingly , the same battery as E71/72 the 1500 mah one, which promises a month of standby time !
  • More homescreens(5 to be exact) to accomodate the widgets.
  • $490 before taxes and subsidies,Shipping Q2,2011

Product manager talks about the E6 :

Both these phones share a very unique differentiation factor that is non-existent in other Symbian devices and that is “Anna” aka the PR2.0 version of Symbian^3. Also fondly called by the community as the new symbian, but it’s far from new.

The refreshed Symbian “Anna” includes :

  • New iconography (Rounded icons, that i already have in a theme)
  • New UI for browser ( Only UI change browser performance claimed to be 3x faster but i highly doubt it having seen so many bad video demos of it )
  • New split screen portrait qwerty input ( Finally ! ha ! )
  • Homescreen swipe is now real-time, like the photo gallery, kinetic scrolling etc..

That’s it , visually , this is what is enhanced in “Anna” and under the hood , there may be some small improvements like Qt 4.7.3 in-built and better security protocols and encryption for MS exchange and other stuff that you don’t actually care about .

Coming to hardware innards and components, they are the same as all the Symbian^3 devices .. Same CPU,GPU,RAM combo, internal memories vary though. In the camera department, every device apart from the N8 have the same 8 megapixel EDoF units. I can’t comment on them because it is a subject matter of personal opinion. Also, coming to the other features, literally every Symbian^3 phones is a clone of one another, Video recording/playback , USB OTG support.. etc. HDMI output is currently available only on the N8 and the E7, but TV-out is present on every model.

My thoughts on today’s announcements :

First, these phones were already leaked and we already got to know much of the features and specs. So, the launch of these devices did not create any flutter amongst fans. I find these devices alright, it will attract new users to move to Symbian and also will mostly retain earlier E71/72 users, but the jury’s still out on the situation. They both will ship in Q2,2011.Now, coming to software,

Expectations were set very high , users expected the roll out of the much awaited and delayed PR 2.0. Nokia once said PR 2.0 i.e “Anna” would be rolled out in the first quarter of 2011, but we know how that went.

And then there was this rumor about the new UI that may hit Symbian devices during summer, people thought they are going to announce the PR 3.0 with new UI today and then roll it out gradually , skipping the not-so-big “Anna” update. Overall there were very high expectations since we had already seen PR 2.0 in C7 astound. So, they kept their word and released two “Anna” devices, but the catch was , there was no announcement date on the rollout of PR 2.0 for existing users. they said ” in coming months “. This was a huge let down for many existing users who were eagerly awaiting the PR2.0 update. Heck, i was expecting the launch of PR 3.0 !

But , there is nothing totally wrong in Nokia’s side.  They would have wowed Symbian device seekers if it weren’t for those earlier device leaks and marketing fails( i am looking at you PR guys at Nokia youtube and Three UK ). Although they could have communicated the delays better. for example : ” we are starting the roll out process of PR 2.0 in a few weeks and we will complete the rollout in a month or two ” This sounds much better than “In the coming months ”

Nokia needs to handle customer expectations better. Deliver on promises, promptly and efficiently communicate delays and huge changes . They have failed to do this , for a long time since OPK’s times.

And finally , here’s the press release :

Nokia E6 extends business mobility range and Nokia X7 introduces a new entertainment device for mobile gamers, both using the latest update of Symbian software

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the Nokia E6 and the Nokia X7, two new smartphones aimed at business people and entertainment enthusiasts respectively. The two devices are the first Nokia smartphones to contain the updated Symbian software, with new icons and usability enhancements such as improved text input, a faster browser and refreshed Ovi Maps.

“We are further strengthening Nokia’s smartphone portfolio with these two new devices, both of which offer a more beautiful and intuitive user experience that will soon also be available for the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01,” said Jo Harlow, head of Nokia’s Smart Devices business. “With these new products and more Symbian devices and user enhancements coming in the near future, we are confident we can keep existing Nokia smartphone customers engaged, as well as attract new first-time and competitor smartphone users.”

Following on from Nokia’s highly successful Nokia E71 and Nokia E72 devices, the Nokia E6 is a sleek business smartphone with a full QWERTY keypad and a high resolution touch display. Designed using premium materials such as glass and stainless steel, the device comes in a compact size that makes it easy to use with either one hand or two. The Nokia X7 is an entertainment-focused smartphone with a large 4″ display ideal for gaming, and an 8 Megapixel camera for capturing pictures and HD-quality video. A distinctively designed device, the Nokia X7 is made from a combination of seamless stainless steel and glass – delivering a solid and durable feel in the hand. The Nokia X7 comes preloaded with the popular Galaxy on Fire HD and Asphalt 5 HD games.

The Nokia E6 and Nokia X7 are also the first smartphones to contain the complete update of the Symbian software user experience. This update offers a host of usability enhancements, including fresh, new icons, improved text input, a faster internet browsing experience and a refreshed Ovi Maps application with improved search and new public transport routes. The renewed software also offers a strong set of new features aimed at business users in particular, including true enterprise grade security with hardware accelerated encryption, and new e-mail features such as full meeting request support.

In coming months the software update, which is nick-named Symbian Anna, will also be available as standard on newly shipping Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01 devices, as well as available to download on previously purchased models of those same smartphones.

For developers, Symbian Anna greatly enhances the user experience on Nokia smartphones and makes the Qt business opportunity with Nokia even greater. Read more at: http://blogs.forum.nokia.com/blog/nokia-developer-news/
